(During quarantine my girlfriend and I are going through the Marvel movies chronologically. Surprisingly, she is really enjoying them, maybe even more than me. We are already a couple down and I’m gunna do write-ups for all of ‘em, the good and the bad.)
This is sooo much better than I remembered. For some reason, I didn’t enjoy this movie the one time I saw it some years ago. For the life of me, I don’t know why. This is the exact kind of movie I’m in to. Just straight up espionage spy stuff.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier really feels like the first movie of the MCU as we know it, probably because it’s the first directed by the Russo Brothers who basically spear-headed the whole thing from hear on out. This movie is a lot more mature, well shot, well told, and in keeping with the MCU. Everyone is at the top of their game, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Sam Jackson all playing in their own little sandbox.
In fact, Nick fury has some of the best scenes here, especially the scene in his car/bat mobile/whatever that fucking thing is. His car’s just getting banged up from every direction by Hydra militia and Fury’s stuck in the car waiting to get blasted by a machine gun. Intense as hell and his escape is badass. The scene on the boat, the scene on the higheway, there are loads. The whole movie is full of action scenes like this. The action scenes reminded me of those from Heat. The way the action is controlled and slowly works forward to take over the outpost.
For the most part, there is little I didn’t like. However, the final action sequence turns in to standard 3rd act ridiculousness – the mission is to replace some microchips in three hangars in the sky while a guy with a metal arm tries to stop Cap. Whatever. And of course, it goes on for far too long. I preferred it when it was an espionage movie.
Random thought – There are so many high kicks in this movie. It’s like Captain America’s go to move – here’s a drinking game idea – Winter Soldier Drinking Game: drink every time someone does a high kick
It’s a bit weird that the movie is called Winter Soldier, no? It’s like if endgame was called Avengers: Thanos, or if homecoming was called Spider-Man: Vulture, or if Batman and Robin was called Batman & Robin: Mr Freeze, Poison Ivy, & Bain. Anyway, what a great movie. It’s probably one of the greatest sequels of all time compared to how inferior it’s predecessor is. It’s clever, it’s edge of your seat stuff, the action scenes are the most realistic, the story is gripping. This is what every superhero movie should strive for. This is the bar.
Also, Random though #2 – Why is every superhero sidekick black? First War Machine and now Falcon. Hmmm…
