Avery Tare’s Slasher Flicks – 19,246 Listeners
Side project of the Animal Collective founder, Slasher Flicks the most AC sounding side project out of all 100 of them. Avey Tare apparently wanted the band’s one album to sound like Halloween. I don’t know if he succeeded, but the lead single, “Little Fang,” is one of the greatest AC affiliated songs that exists. It’s the spiritual successor to “Monster Mash.” The band could arguably be labelled a “supergroup,” as it’s made up of Dirty Projectors’ Angel Deradoorian and Ponytail’s Jeremy Hyman. Slasher Flicks is a fascinating album that’s deserving of way more than 20,000 listeners.
Black Dice – 10,073 Listeners
It isn’t too surprising that Black Dice have such few listeners, though barely more than 10,000 is still way too low for a band affiliated with some bigger NY bands from the art scene. The NY experimental noise band create walls of electronic madness in which melodies peak through in such satisfying and dynamic ways. They have a good few albums under their belt and if you’re gonna start with any of them, start with Repo. It’s by far their most accessible, but that’s not to say you shouldn’t give it a chance. The music is as mental as their artwork.
Handsome Furs – 19,626 Listeners
Handsome furs are yet another indie rock band from Canada that should be in the conversation more than they are. The husband and wife duo should get much more recognition than they do. Handsome Furs is Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner’s side project, which is much more raw, grimier, and touch around the edges than the music of his main clan, but more stylish too. Handsome Furs have three albums, each one more synth-heavy than the last, and all of them are full of anarchist, apocalyptic hits.
The Long Blondes – 19,321 Listeners
In the mid-2000s, there were a lot of similar British indie bands that came out came out of the woodwork, and they just could not compete with the creativity that was being churned out of bands in North America. However, there were a few that could keep up, and one of them was The Long Blondes. It’s typical indie rock music but it sounds like you’re being squared up to, like you’re heading in to a fight. It’s a female lead band with menacing vocal deliveries and guitars that cut like a knife.
Tilly And The Wall – 18,497 Listeners
I know I say this a lot, but this one hurts. Instead of a drummer, This Conor Oberst endorsed band have a tap dancer, which might sound like a gimmick and maybe it is, but it sounds great and it contrasts so weirdly against songs about drugs and sex. It is youthful and it reminds me of when I was 16. Its mix of male and female lead songs come off a little twee, but it’s a product of the times. The female lead tracks are some of the most beautiful ear worms, especially the acoustic “Lost Girls.”
DNTEL – 18,246 Listeners
You might not of heard of DNTEL, but you’ve definitely heard of DNTEL and Death Cab For Cutie’s baby, The Postal Service. Well DNTEL is where it all started. The Postal Service was born out of a song by DNTEL featuring Ben Gibbard, “The Dream of Evan and Chan,” which is arguably better than any Postal Service track. Not only did DNTEL start The Postal Service but it singlehandedly created the whole genre of indieronica (ugh, I hate that word.) This is where it began. DNTEL is historic, and in my opinion should be seen as a much bigger deal.
Life Without Buildings – 13,681 Listeners
This one is really heartbreaking, however, not surprising. Life Without Buildings only ever released one album proper, and that was 18 years ago. It’s indie rock music from a Scottish band with talk-singing vocals from a British female vocalist that, at times, almost sounds like skating. Any Other City is one of the greatest albums of all time. It sounds like a band you’d listen to at a dive bar, but there’s something different about them. “The Leanover” is the most hypnotising, engrossing, imaginative indie-rock tracks that exits.
